The #1 Supplement for the Cold, Flu and Corona Virus
There are a ton of supplements that can support immunity, but we all know that not all of our patients are going to take a ton of supplements.
Sometimes getting them to take one is enough.
One of my colleagues asked me, "If you could only pick one supplement to support healthy Wei Qi, what would it be?"
Hands down it's vitamin D!
The benefits of healthy vitamin D levels are numerous and well documented. A quick internet search and you'll find it. Most importantly, vitamin D is essential to antimicrobial compounds that fight viral and bacterial infections. And people that supplement with vitamin D in the winter months have lower infection rates.
In addition, low levels of vitamin D are correlated with worse COVID-19 infection outcomes. 😬
Food Sources of Vitamin D
Vitamin D is rich in sardines, salmon, fatty fish, and caviar (which is so popular with the kiddos these days- 🤪).
You can also get it from dairy (unless you're sensitive or sick), eggs, and mushrooms.
Still, most people are vitamin D deficient, up to 80% depending on the latitude they live at.
And supplementing is so simple.
My favorite supplement is Orthomolecular's D3 and K2 liquid supplement. It's a tasteless oil and each drop is equivalent to 1,000 IU of vitamin D. Plus, it's SUPER easy to hide in food or liquid, especially if they only need a few drops.
According to the Vitamin D Council, a maintenance dosage of 1000 IU of Vitamin D3 per 25 pounds of body weight. I highly recommend having your pediatric patients tested to make sure their levels are adequate and supplement if they don't want to test.
