Healing the Unwellness Gap™ Part 3: Diagnosing the Root

Diagnosing the Root

Wouldn't it be nice if there was a tool that could quickly diagnose the root cause of our patient's health problems?

It's not like babies or young children can tell us what's wrong or where the problem is. To make a diagnosis, we're largely relying on our skills in asking the right questions and interpreting what the parents are observing.

Sometimes the tongue will provide clues about the imbalance, but most of the time it doesn't. The pulse is useful, but only for kids ages 8 and up. In my opinion, finger vein diagnosis rarely adds valuable diagnostic information that isn't already obvious.

Still, we can diagnose and treat with the information we have and get good results. It's easier when the imbalance is straightforward and the diagnosis is obvious.

Unfortunately, many pediatric conditions are complicated. There's both excess and deficiency, heat and cold, damp and dryness. It can leave practitioners feeling uncertain about where to start or what the root cause of the issue is.

But, it doesn't have to be that way.

What if there was a tool that could take some of the guesswork out of the equation?

Well, there is.

And I use it all the time, but I've rarely talked about it on the blog because not many people have this tool. But they should!

This tool is absolutely great for working with kids because:

1. It can be used on patients of all ages. Yes! Even newborn babies.

2. It provides objective diagnostic information. Pulse and tongue diagnosis are subjective and even two very experienced practitioners can have different interpretations.

3. It can determine which meridians are excess, deficient, or split (a split means the energy between the right and left sides of the body are significantly different).

4. It can illuminate which acupuncture points will restore the flow of Qi so healing can occur.

5. It helps you educate your patients about the imbalances that are present and the care needed to restore their child's health.

6. It makes it super efficient to give home care instructions.

This is all possible with AcuGraph™ Meridian Analysis.

I've been using the AcuGraph™ in my practice since 2008. I cannot tell you the number of difficult and complicated cases that it has helped me with.

What I've learned from Yoshio Manaka, Miki Shima, Jake Fratkin, and Kimberly Thompson is that to truly treat the root cause of an issue you must first restore the flow of Qi in the body.

The AcuGraph™ quickly and objectively helps me locate Qi imbalances to choose acupoints that restore flow. Then I can work on the branches and choose acupoints to treat the symptoms.

How AcuGraph Can Help - Patient Example

A few years ago I treated a 12-year-old boy who came to me after being in a motor vehicle accident. We'll call him Harry Potter.

He was having headaches and neck pain, and in addition to those symptoms, he also had ongoing issues with motor tics and AcuGraph Example.pngfood allergies. The motor tics had been under control, but since the accident, they were occurring 20 to 30 times per hour. He was also having abdominal pain in the evenings.

In the photo below, start at the bottom and you'll see his first AcuGraph™ results. Remember, this is a snapshot of how the energy is flowing in his meridians. It is NOT his zang/fu diagnosis.

You'll notice in his first graph, he has a lot of meridian imbalances because there's not much green on his chart. Green indicates that the meridians are balanced, blue indicates deficiency, red indicates excess, and purple indicates split energy (a significant imbalance in the energy between the right and left sides).

As you move up the charts in the photo below, you'll notice that the graph gets greener and his pattern of imbalance becomes more apparent. Each week I used a combination of acupuncture and other non-needle techniques on the points to balance his graph and treat his symptoms.

I circled the Liver and Stomach meridians on the photo below to highlight the pattern of imbalance the emerged - excess energy in the Stomach, Liver, and then eventually the Small Intestine meridians. So, I had Harry and his mom do daily acupressure on the LV 2 and ST 45 to balance the energy in between his weekly treatment. I also applied ear seeds to the Liver and Stomach points in the ear.

By his fifth visit, he felt better, his headaches, neck and abdominal pain were gone. His tics, much to his mom's amazement were under control.

The AcuGraph™ charts helped me explain the imbalances that had caused the tics to resurface and that motivated both Harry and his mom to take an active role in his healing. They were diligent with all my recommendations and that shows in the results.

In addition to all the diagnostic capabilities, AcuGraph™ is a huge part of my patient education process. I'm able to:

1. Educate parents about Chinese medicine and show the parents AND child what's out of balance. It's very motivating to help kids take an active role in their healing. They want their chart to be green!

2. Email custom recommendations and a detailed healing program.

3. Email home care acupressure points with photo and point location descriptions

4. Email a customized list of healing foods based on diagnosis.

As my practice has gotten busier and my patients' problems more complicated, having this system is a HUGE time saver for me. There's a fantastic electronic records feature with templates that make note taking very fast.

From my own personal experience, it is an investment that was paid off 100-fold! I love it, my patients love it, and it gets results!

Thanks for sharing your experience Robin. I’ve always been intrigued by the AcuGraph system though thought it would actually make my treatment times longer. Happy to hear it helps in several ways and makes things more efficient. Anything that helps with complicated cases that you know has several layers would definitely be helpful!
